Write Well in Government

This six-hour workshop is for anyone who needs to produce clear, accessible and reader-focused writing in a government environment. It draws on the first-hand experiences of former senior government writers, and considers the critical role that effective writing plays in the efficiency and transparency of government decision-making.

Focusing on the essential techniques of communicating clearly and writing in plain English, examples in this workshop are based on typical government documents, such as ministerials, briefing notes, emails and letters.

This workshop can be delivered as a one-day, face-to-face workshop, or online over two consecutive half-days.

Participants will enhance their knowledge of the foundations of good writing, and learn how to:

  • structure documents, with a focus on planning
  • write clearly and choose the best words for the job, in plain English

Edit Well

Don’t let a minor error detract from your credibility. This three-hour workshop is for anyone who needs to master the essentials of reviewing their own or others’ work. It is an excellent extension to the one-day Write Well writing workshops.

During the workshop, participants edit and proof several pieces of writing, from unstructured paragraphs, to passive sentences, to non-parallel bulleted lists.

What will you learn?

Participants will learn practical skills, which can be applied immediately, including:

  • tips and tricks to fix common errors that detract from the professionalism of any document
  • how to improve your writing efficiency, with fewer mistakes and fewer re-writes
  • what to look for in others’ work, and how to provide feedback that’s meaningful and useful
  • how to use technology to speed up the editing process
  • using style guides and templates to ensure the credibility and consistency of communication.

Present Well

This three-hour workshop is for anyone who needs to confidently present at work—from small meetings to large events. Using our proven techniques, we’ll show you how to overcome any fear of public speaking and deliver a great presentation that will engage your audience.

Participants will learn practical skills, for greater confidence and more impact, including:

  • how to use their mind, voice and body effectively to deliver a great presentation
  • simple techniques to calm nerves
  • how to structure a presentation for maximum impact

We specialise in in-house workshops, delivered face-to-face or online. In-house workshops can be team-specific, or for a broader group from your organisation.

Face-to-face or online?

If you can get your team together in the same location, then we recommend that face-to-face training. We are happy to come to you, no matter where you are in Queensland, or elsewhere in Australia (travel expenses may apply).

Our online workshops are perfect for teams that are working remotely, or where it’s not possible to be physically in the same place.

Either way, we promise your team will have a highly enjoyable, practical and informative time in one of our workshops.

LogisticsWe come to you, and deliver the workshop in a single day. We will bring our own laptop to plug-in and present, or we will email the presentation through before the workshop to be pre-loaded on to your system. We will also bring the workshop booklets and handouts for all participants.We ask you to invite your participants to a MS Teams (or other technology) meeting from your calendar. In the week before the workshop, we will run a quick tech test to ensure everything is working as it should. On the day of the workshop, we will ask you to provide our trainer with ‘presenter’ access 30 minutes before the workshop is due to start. Ten minutes before the workshop, We ask that all participants to join the meeting 10 minutes before it is due to start, to test their access, camera and microphone, and to resolve any issues with your IT team.
